This icon explains set union and intersection using one pair of overlapping circles duplicated into two panels. In the left panel both circles are fully shaded, showing that the union of two sets includes every element belonging to either one, or to both. In the right panel the circles are left unshaded and only the narrow lens where they cross is filled in, showing that the intersection keeps only the elements shared by both sets. Because both panels use an identical circle layout, the amount of shading is the only variable, making the difference between combining sets and finding what they have in common immediately visible. Suited to lessons on set theory, Venn diagrams, logic, and discrete mathematics.
