This image may not be used to state or imply ESA endorsement of any company or product 3D-printed titanium deployment mechanism for satellite solar panels. 3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing, creates objects by the successive addition of layers of material. This mode of fabrication reduces the weight of this mechanism and the number of separate parts needed. The spiral hinges in the foreground cannot be produced as a single part in any other way. The mechanism, called the Adel'Light, was produced by Thales Alenia Space in 2014.
