Anthracobia melaloma is a species of apothecial fungus belonging to the family Pyronemataceae. It produces orangish cup-or disc-like fruit bodies that have small brown hairs around the edge. Fruit bodies occur in burn sites. It is one of the first things to appear on ash and charcoal in a burned area with its spores laying dormant underground awakened by the heat. It quickly colonises large area of burned ground and stabilises the fragile soil to prevent erosion in heavy rain before plants can re-establish. Scientists are interested in it's ability to use enzymes to break down carbon which might be useful in combating climate change.
