Castel Sant'Angelo seen from the left bank of the Tiber River. The Castel was built between 135-139. It has been demolished, repaired and rebuilt several times over the years. Originally it was built by the Roman Emperor Hadrian as a family mausoleum, later served as a papal fortress connected by a tunnel in the walls with the Vatican, residences and prisons. It currently houses a museum dedicated to the history of the building and the city of Rome.
