Black lacquered slippers sit neatly side by side on a massive stone slab at the entrance of Ryokan Sanyoso in Izunokuni, Japan, in the morning shadow of the surrounding trees. The estate was built in 1929 for the family of Mitsubishi founder Yataro Iwasaki, became a ryokan in 1947, and has been an important cultural property since 2017.
