Composite image of a total solar eclipse over the Atacama desert in Chile. Total solar eclipses occur when the Moon passes directly in front of the Sun. They usually occur less than once a year, and can only be seen from a small area of the Earth's surface. At totality, the solar atmosphere (corona) becomes visible causing the so-called Baily's beads effect. Photographed on 3 July 2019.
