Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of jute fibres. Jute fibres are taken from the bast (inner bark or skin) of the jute plant (Corchorus sp.). They are mainly composed of cellulose (plant fibre) and lignin (wood fibre). The can be used as insulation or to make a textile called hessian or burlap. The strands are coarse but very strong and thus are ideal as inexpensive sacks and packaging. Magnification: x150 when printed at 15cm wide.
